Nalin Prabhat, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has been appointed as the Special Director General (SDG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announcement on Thursday, August 15, 2024. Prabhat will take over as the Director General of Police (DGP) after the current DGP, RR Swain, retires on September 30.
“Following his transfer to the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) Cadre from the Andhra Pradesh Cadre, Sh. Nalin Prabhat, IPS (AP:1992), has been appointed as the Special Director General (SDG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, effective immediately and continuing until 30.09.2024,” the MHA’s order stated.
Who is Nalin Prabhat
Nalin, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service officer, has been serving as the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) since April 2024. At 55 years old, he has had a distinguished career, earning several accolades, including three Police Gallantry Medals and the Parakram Padak. Prabhat has a strong background in counter-insurgency operations and previously commanded the Greyhounds, a highly specialized anti-Naxal unit in Andhra Pradesh.
Jammu and Kashmir has experienced a significant increase in terrorist activities over the past few months, with frequent encounters, such as an attack on an army convoy in Kathua and skirmishes in Doda and Udhampur. Approximately 20 soldiers and more than a dozen civilians have been killed in clashes this year. On Wednesday, an Indian Army captain succumbed to his injuries after being critically wounded in an encounter in Doda district.

Prabhat’s vast experience in managing critical operations is further demonstrated by his previous roles in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), where he served as the Inspector General (IG) of operations and later as the Additional Director General (ADG) overseeing deployments in Kashmir.
