A dejected Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling via a social media post on Thursday morning, a day after being disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024. Addressing her mother Premlata, Vinesh, a three-time Olympian, wrote, “Mother, wrestling won against me, I lost… Your dreams and my courage are shattered. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will forever be indebted to all of you. Please forgive (me),” she wrote on X.

Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics and lost her chance at a medal just hours before her important gold medal match because she was 100 grams over the weight limit during the weigh-in on Wednesday morning.

At 29 years old, Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the Olympic finals, securing at least a silver medal in the women’s 50kg category. However, on the morning of her match, she was disqualified because she was over the weight limit, despite her coaches, support staff, and the Indian Olympic Association trying their best to help her.

 Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has now shared a heartwarming post, offering a show of support for Phogat.

Sonu posted on X (formerly Twitter), “When you achieve something which way above any medal. That’s what you have achieved my friend @Phogat_Vinesh.”

“So proud of you. Let’s give her such a warm welcome that every athlete in this country irrespective of any win or lose can proudly say “THATS MY INDIA,” he concluded.

Phogat was set to compete in the gold-medal match in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling at the Paris Olympics. However, the three-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist was disqualified just before the final because she was 100 grams over the 50kg weight limit.

Despite working hard all night and spending time in the sauna, Vinesh Phogat couldn’t lose the extra weight. She also decided to file a protest with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) yesterday, challenging her disqualification.

I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head on. We are all rooting for you,” the Prime Minister posted on X” the Prime Minister wrote on X, as the nation dealt with the heartbreak of the top wrestler’s disqualification just before the final. Phogat had already secured a medal and had raised the nation’s hopes for gold with her outstanding performance in earlier matches.

According to sources, the Prime Minister has discussed the situation with PT Usha, the veteran athlete and current president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), regarding the possible actions India and Vinesh Phogat can take in response to her disqualification. He has instructed the IOA chief to thoroughly investigate all available options and strongly urged her to lodge a formal protest against Phogat’s disqualification.
