Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman has shared his worries about his safety while discussing normalizing relations with Israel with U.S. lawmakers.
As reported by Politico, the Crown Prince is concerned that working towards peace with Israel could put his life in danger, and he mentioned this risk during the negotiations.
Saudi Arabia’s efforts to improve its strained relationship with Israel during the ongoing conflict in Gaza could put Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at risk of assassination. According to the American website Politico, the Crown Prince has expressed concerns about his safety during ongoing negotiations with U.S. lawmakers aimed at normalizing ties with Israel.
The Saudi leader reportedly told members of the U.S. Congress that his life is at risk due to his leadership in pursuing a significant deal with the U.S. and Israel, which includes the normalization of Saudi-Israeli relations. Politico, citing sources, reported that the Crown Prince fears being targeted for his role in these peace talks.
During a conversation with U.S. Congress lawmakers, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman brought up Anwar Sadat, the Egyptian leader who was killed after making a peace deal with Israel. According to the report, he also asked what the U.S. did to protect Sadat. The Crown Prince talked about the threats he faces for trying to finalize a similar deal and how he would explain his decision, which is likely to anger other Arab countries already upset with Israel because of the war in Gaza.
He also shared his fear of losing support in his own country, as “Saudis care very deeply” about Israel’s conflict with Palestine.
