Versova police in Mumbai have arrested two individuals in connection with the death of a 36-year-old rickshaw driver who was fatally crushed by their speeding SUV on August 12.
The accused, Nikhil Jawale (34) and his friend Shubam Dongre (33), have been arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
According to police reports to ANI, the two were presented before a local court in Andheri and were remanded to five days of police custody for further investigation. Their blood samples have been sent for testing to determine if they were driving under the influence of alcohol.
Last month in Mumbai, a man crashed his BMW into a motorcycle near Atria Mall in Worli, leading to the death of a woman named Kaveri Nakhwa (45) and injuries to her husband, Pradeep. The driver, identified as Mihir Shah, was arrested 58 hours later at Virar Fata. According to the latest update, forensic tests showed no trace of alcohol in Shah’s blood and urine samples. Police explained that alcohol tests can become ineffective after 12 hours, so by the time Shah was arrested, 58 hours after the accident, any alcohol in his system would have likely been gone.
Earlier, in the early hours of May 19, the underage son of Vishal Agrawal, a well-known real estate developer and owner of Brahma Realty and Infrastructure, was driving his father’s unregistered Porsche Taycan at 150 km per hour. While under the influence of alcohol, he tragically hit two people—Aneesh Awadhia, 24, and Ashwini Koshta, 24—who were riding a motorcycle in Kalyaninagar. Vishal Agrawal and his father are now in police custody for allegedly tampering with the juvenile’s blood samples.
